Mark Bates was a film studies student attending his final year at De Montfort University in Leicester.  He was a gifted camera operator, script writer and director. He often received high grades for his practical work and his tutors and lecturers at the University quite often praised him for his creative and original ideas.  Unfortunately, half way through his final year Mark's personality made a change for the worse and this was reflected in his grades which got lower and lower.  Alarm bells should have rung for his tutors when he handed in an essay that criticised Hollywood for not being realistic enough; however, it was brushed off by his tutors as being just another critique of Hollywood, which is normal in film studies.  Mark's social life took a turn for the worse when he fell out with his best friend and his classmates started calling him 'freaky Mark' because of his obsession with realism in films.  Mark would often walk around the University campus filming his classmates secretly.  This should have been a premonition of things to come, but was ignored.  Mark finally took his ideas of realism to new heights when he made his final project for the year. He decided to make a horror film with a twist and to make it more realistic he would actually kill his cast and record it.  He carefully selected his victims for his film from three of his classmates luring them into a false sense of security by making them believe that they were involved in the final project.
